There are a lot of tool review websites out there. Most of them are written by people who have never turned a spanner in anger, never spent a February morning trying to coax a flat battery back to life in a freezing Northern Irish car park, and never had to justify a tool purchase to themselves at the end of a long working week.
The Garage Toolbox is different.
Where It Started
It started in a driveway, the way most things in the motor trade do.
Growing up, the garage was a second living room. Weekends meant helping dad work on whatever needed attention — oil changes, brake pads, the kind of jobs that teach you early that the right tool makes the difference between a twenty minute job and a two hour nightmare. That early education in what actually works, as opposed to what looks good on a shelf, has stayed with us ever since.
Nearly 20 Years in the Motor Trade
The Garage Toolbox is built on nearly two decades of hands-on experience across almost every corner of the UK motor trade.
That means time spent in car sales and light commercial vehicle sales — understanding what fleet buyers, tradespeople and private customers actually need from their vehicles and the equipment they use to maintain them. It means running an independent vehicle sales operation, which taught us everything about preparation, presentation and the tools required to do both properly. It means getting our hands dirty working alongside a highly skilled mechanic — the kind of experience that shows you very quickly which tools are worth their price and which ones will let you down at the worst possible moment.
It also means years of detailing — properly, not just a quick wash and wax — which is why our buying guides on car care products are written by someone who has used these products in the real world, not someone who has watched a YouTube video about them.
Why We Built This Site
After nearly two decades in the trade, one thing became consistently clear — the information available online for UK mechanics, mobile traders and car enthusiasts is either too generic, too American, or written by someone who has clearly never held the tool they are recommending.
Product recommendations that don’t ship to Northern Ireland. Price comparisons in dollars. “Best buys” that haven’t been in stock at a UK retailer for six months. Glowing reviews of tools that any experienced mechanic would tell you to avoid.
The Garage Toolbox exists to fix that.
Every buying guide and review on this site is written from the perspective of someone who has spent years working in and around the UK motor trade — someone who understands the difference between a tool that works in a controlled test environment and one that holds up to daily trade use in the real world.

Our Promise to You
We only recommend products we genuinely believe are worth buying. Our recommendations are based on real-world research, verified specifications and trade knowledge built up over nearly two decades in the motor trade.
We are transparent about our affiliate relationships — this site does contain affiliate links, and if you purchase through our links we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That commission is what keeps the lights on and allows us to keep producing independent, honest content. It never influences what we recommend. If a product isn’t good enough to recommend honestly, it won’t appear on this site regardless of any commercial consideration.
Based in Northern Ireland, Writing for the Whole of the UK and Ireland
We are based in Northern Ireland and write specifically for a UK and Irish audience. That means UK pricing, UK retailers, UK shipping availability and an understanding of the specific needs of mechanics and car enthusiasts on this side of the Atlantic.
When we recommend a jump starter, we check it ships to Northern Ireland. When we quote a price, it is in pounds sterling. When we suggest a retailer, it is one that actually serves our audience.
Get in Touch
We love hearing from fellow mechanics, mobile traders and car enthusiasts. Whether you have a question about a product recommendation, want to suggest a tool we should review, or just want to talk cars and tools — we are always happy to hear from you.
